RRRA Addresses New Tobacco Legislation

For Immediate Release. OTTAWA, November 19th The Rideau River Residence Association (RRRA) is currently assessing and addressing the impact of new Provincial Legislation on the ban of tobacco sales on campus. Earlier this November, Associate Health Minister Dipika Damerla  announced from Queen’s Park that the ban will take effect on January 1st, 2015.

“This will certainly affect sales at Abstentions,” RRRA President and Chief Financial Officer William Verschuren said ” After evaluating the situation with our business advisers and management, we are currently projecting a $20 000 loss for the association as a result of the new legislation. This kind of loss seriously impacts future programming coming into second semester. ”

Vice President (Administration) Graham Pedregosa met with Ottawa-Centre MPP and Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services, Yassir Naqvi on November 12th, 2014 to directly raise concerns.

“We had a very progressive meeting with Minister Naqvi” Graham Pedregosa said ” Yassir has committed into finding RRRA transitional funding to help offset the financial  lost due to the ban. “

“We have a great relationship with Minister Naqvi”, said Pedregosa. “We had a substantial conversation about transitional funding and while there is no commitment from the province we have every reason to believe there will be relief to student associations.”

“We know the intent of the new regulations was not to harm student associations”, said Verschuren, “and we look forward to seeing what financial transitional support the province can provide.”
